Why do we do the things that we do?
What type of pleasure really fills you?
Nothing, oh nothing will satisfy the soul
unless you give up the selfish ego
Because we are all Psycho
living in a world that is not our own
creating the spaces we call a home
and round and round the mind we play
waiting for time to complete the day
do we not know the secrets we hid
way deep down the dwelling of id
and who stands guard of knowing yourself?
It is you, It is you and nobody else
The enemy with in, that is and never wasTalks to you always, you let him, just becauseWe are all Psychowe are crazywe fly like batswe travel on those wingslike swollen drugged rats
Why do we do the things that we do?
This is a question that arises when studying the brain and observing human behavior. We, as curious minds, attempt to analyze the processes of how one thinks and interprets the world around him. In psychoanalysis and psychodynamic theory the explanation of why humans behave the way they do is based the idea that there are innate behaviors locked in our subconscious mind that drive us to fulfill hidden desires and lusts. The definition of psychoanalysis describes this method as a way to understand the mental processes of the subconscious mind and also formulating a system to address conflicts that are found in it (“Psychoanalysis,” 2017). Hence, the purpose and the techniques of psychoanalysis and psychodynamic theory are to unlocked these behaviors from the subconscious mind and place them in the conscious mind. By doing this, the patient or the person who seeks to resolve inner conflicts, addresses the appropriate problem. Internalizing this theory as truth means that one needs to develop a practicum that would address inner conflicts. Hence we see the development of psychoanalysis practices such as dream analysis and word associations (Roberts, 2000). The development of these practices, and using them, is the therapy.
Why is this Important?
The field of Psychology, especially with the growth and exploration of psychoanalysis, has been extremely benefited in addressing the issues of the inner-man, more commonly referred to as the subconscious, or what I would like to refer to as the soul spirit. This awareness of the subconscious would not have been addressed in it’s completeness if it had not been for Sigmund Freud’s implications of the Id, Ego, Superego theory. Therefore, the explanation of the Id living in our subconscious minds as adults, brings focus to the “pleasure principle” and why we behave the way that we behave. According to Freud, the Id drives our actions to fulfill our most basic needs. Furthermore, our desire to meet these needs is connected to our need to be satisfied, hence the presence of the “pleasure principle” (“Psychoanalysis,” 2017). If we do not meet these specific needs then we will feel a sense of dissatisfaction, therefore anxiety, therefore inner-turmoil, and therefore pain. It is only by the presence of pain that a problem arises, and a solution needs to be formulated. The solution in psychology, I suggest, was the development of a system to address the issues of the soul spirit, the inner-man, or the subconscious mind, that is psychoanalysis and psychodynamic theory. These theories, then are put into practice as psychotherapy. Johansson (2017), in a historical review of the theory, notes that psychoanalysis is not only a theory of how to address issues of the psyche, but it is also a practice.
The Pleasure Principle and the avoidance of pain theories are important to Psychoanalysis because they were new ideas that lived outside of common rules of academic thought. These theories opened up a door of exploration in the field of Psychology that would have otherwise remained dormant. Hence, new ideas, that did not rely on formal practices of psychological evaluation emerged from these theories. Freud’s work, although controversial, was important. Freud’s work of explaining the human mind was very significant in the field of psychology and continues to add value to contemporary thought today (“Psychoanalysis,” 2017).
Many people do not connect this exploration of the mind to thoughts and values communicated in the bible but this issue is actually address in the bible. To live in the flesh is to live for pleasure but to live in the spirit is to live for the will of God. Simply put, God offers solution to the turmoils of the inner man and that is to deny the flesh, be born again in the spirit, and live beyond the temptations of the flesh. The flesh is controlled by the lust after pleasure, which is sin. To live a happy life one's motives have to change, which means one's mind has to change. When a person's only concern is to get more, be more, and achieve more for the purpose of obtaining a higher status or position, he is always left wanting more because what he is feeding his soul-spirit leaves him empty. The acquisition of things is not really nourishing the spirit long term. You will always long for more.
In Contrast
If one's mind is set on the things of the spirit, his motives are usually set to help people or provide a service. This type of mind fills the spirit with Love, Joy, Kindness, Patience, Peace, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-control. Consequently this food also manifest into a real life example of what it means to be a person at peace, full of joy, and spreading that goodness to others. A mind that is set on doing the will of God, is a mind that is like Christ's. It is a mind with purpose, a mind that doesn't get drunk from the things of this world, a mind that is focused on a task, and a mind that is set higher than pleasure.
If we can't understand this concept then we are out of our minds, lost, and confused about who we are and how we were made. This confused state will have us seeking fake food that has no developmental value for your true self. The need to not feel pain, while not identifying the truth, will have us eating genetically modified organisms that eventually cause cancer.
Stop being crazy and stop eating foreign objects that will not feed your soul!
Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. 2As a result, they do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. 3For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. 4They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. 5But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
